Incognito Ex - Geri Krotow (HRS #2101 - Aug 2020)

Series: Silver Valley PD (Book 8)

When she is targeted by a vicious mobster

A past love is her only hope

When a Russian gangster targets Coral Staufer, she is desperate for help. Coral stumbles across an undercover agent none other than the man she loved and lost, Trevor Stone. Trevor will risk anything to stop her from becoming a mob casualty…even risk his career to protect Coral. But when their past love reignites, their entire mission -- and very lives -- are at stake.

Terrific second chance romance combined with gripping suspense. I stayed up way too late reading it and picked it up first thing in the morning, anxious to finish it.

Coral left California after her divorce and returned to her hometown. She opened an event planning business that did very well until an explosion destroyed the barn and part of the farmhouse that she used. She is working hard to rebuild her business while supervising the rebuilding of her barn. She lives in a camper on the property to be closer. One night she confronts trespassers, only to discover that they are members of the same Russian Organized Crime group that blew up her barn. Threatened with rape and murder by two of the three intruders, Coral is stunned to recognize her ex as the third man.

Trevor isn't happy to see Coral. She was supposed to be away that night, or he wouldn't have led the men there. He has been undercover for months, working to bring down the ROC responsible for drug trafficking and more. The items they are searching for were hidden by the local leader who is currently in jail and could bring down the big boss. Trevor will do anything, even break his cover, to protect Coral.

I loved the suspense of this book. The action was nearly nonstop from the start. Trevor and Coral work together to find the missing items, but the ROC is on their heels the whole time. The attacks increased in intensity, especially once Markova escaped from jail. I loved the scene with the plane, where Coral is the one responsible for their escape. The final confrontation had me on the edge of my seat as Trevor and Coral faced off with Markova over the last of the missing information. Their teamwork was fantastic, and though it didn't turn out quite as I expected, it was satisfying. The danger wasn't quite over, though, as there was a hidden player who had an interest in the outcome. That encounter was a nail-biter, saved by Trevor's timely arrival.

I loved the rekindling of the relationship between Trevor and Coral. They had married young, but the marriage didn't hold up well against Trevor's frequent deployments as a Marine and later undercover missions. However, neither has forgotten the love they once shared. The sparks between them are still there, but both are determined to resist them. Trevor divorced Coral because he felt that his job put her in danger, and that made him no good for her. That reasoning still holds true for him. Coral simply doesn't want to risk having her heart broken again. But a funny thing happens as they work together. Coral gains a better understanding of Trevor's work and the effect it has on him. Trevor gains a new respect for Coral and her abilities. He still has a way to go to overcome his overprotectiveness/insecurity, but a little advice from his boss helps him along the way. I loved his big moment at the end.
